History |
Catuaí, a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra developed by the Instituto Agronomico of Campinas, Brazil, stands out for its high yield and dense planting capability, thanks to its small size. Released in 1972 after rigorous pedigree selection, Catuaí became popular for its robust growth and manageable stature, although it’s notably vulnerable to leaf rust. With both yellow and red fruit variants, it found varying success across Central America; it’s a cornerstone of Brazil’s coffee scene, but less productive elsewhere. Despite just decent cup quality, its efficient harvesting spurred the 1970s and ’80s shift to full-sun cultivation in Central America. |
